Gum Disease

Keeping teeth and gums disease free is a team effort, which requires co-operation and  communication between yourself and Brackenwood.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, and yet surprisingly, most people know nothing about it!

No one wants to lose their teeth so being aware of signs, symptoms and treatments of gum disease could be the most productive step to prevention.

Gingivitis - first stage of gum disease and completely reversible at this stage. The direct cause is accumulation of soft sticky plaque that has not been removed by daily brushing and flossing. The gums become red, swollen and may bleed when brushing. Some people may experience recurring bad breath or a bad taste in their mouth, even if the disease is not advanced.

You can help stop gum disease before it develops by:

  • Use correct brushing and flossing techniques, as shown by your dentist at Brackenwood, to remove plaque and debris and control tartar build up
  • Eating right to ensure correct balance of vitamins and minerals are being consumed
  • Avoiding cigarettes and other forms of tobacco
  • Attending regular check-ups with your dentist at Brackenwood

Periodontitis - if left untreated, gingivitis may progress to a more severe condition known as periodontitis. This is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults as the disease has now progressed to the supporting tissues and structure of the tooth. The teeth will now start to become loose and may eventually be lost. Periodontitis unfortunately, cannot be completely reversed. Treating the disease can prevent more damage occurring and stabilise the condition. It also will improve the health of your mouth and teeth.

People who smoke are much more likely to get periodontitis. The toxins in Tobacco products may increase the damage to the tissues supporting your teeth.
Symptoms include:

  • Reddened, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Loose Teeth
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth

Many people do not know that these symptoms can be signs of a problem. Once your periodontitis is under control, regular brushing and flossing is still extremely important. You should also continue to make appointments every 3 to 6 months at Brackenwood for check-ups and hygiene visits.
